My childhood home is central to my story with environmental degradation. Thanks to my mom, I grew up surrounded by nature and developed a deep appreciation for the environment.
This was where I watched wildlife disappear and the surrounding woods cleared for suburbs. I felt the summers get hotter and the winters more unpredictable. I felt surprised that developments I thought I might enjoy, like warmer temperatures and less insects, unsettled me more every year.

The campus of Michigan State University is an excellent case study for depicting "tamed" nature that inspires appreciation for the environment by representing the intersection between the natural world and civilization.
The Anthropocene encompasses more than humans' negative impact on the Earth. It includes the human-altered landscapes that reflect sustainable interactions with nature.

MSU consists of "novel ecosystems," or ecosystems whose function has been modified to meet humans' preferences. While these landscapes certainly don't reflect "wild" nature, they have nonetheless helped develop a healthy relationship between the MSU community and its natural environment.
Generations of students have been positively shaped by these landscapes, ensuring the centrality of nature in the MSU identity. Despite being entirely human-engineered, these ecosystems contribute to a sustainable future by strengthening the emotional connection between MSU students and nature.

What does it mean to be sustainable? By its definition, sustainability implies carrying on the behavior, traditions, and ways of life that contribute positively to both humans and the ecosystems we depend on (while, of course, mitigating harmful activity such as burning fossil fuels and dumping hazardous waste into water bodies).
Using 360° video and photography, I will capture the types of interactions and novel ecosystems that have helped my generation cultivate a positive relationship with our environment. I want to document the corners of the Earth that we are most motivated to conserve because they are in our backyards, down the road, or behind our old schools.
